In first grade, we continued where we left off last month in learning how to pay close attention in class. The kids seemed to love the story about Fuzzy the Caterpillar that goes with the Student Success Skills curriculum. Each month Fuzzy will go on a new adventure and learn a new lesson in the process.
Second grade heard the story of The Band-Aid Chicken by Becky Rangle Henton. This story has so many lessons embedded in it including resisting peer pressure, having courage to stand up for what is right, resolving conflict peacefully, and how to be a good friend.
In third, fourth, and fifth we discussed anger including recognizing when we are getting angry and steps to take to keep from "blowing our tops" when anger strikes. Third grade heard the story Soda Pop Head by Julia Cook.
I was able to attend the Indiana School Counselor Conference in early November which was a very worthwhile time. At the conference I met the author Julia Cook whose books I use frequently when working with children. She has written over 75 books on countless topics. Chances are if your child is struggling with something, she has written a book that could be useful in starting a conversation with them. I highly recommend the books since they are written in a way that speaks to children. I tend to purchase her books off amazon.com. Check out her website for more information.
