Summary of School Counseling Services
Mrs. Newman has a unique position in the school that seeks to provide effective leadership, advocacy, consultation, and collaboration with students, legal guardians, school staff, administration, and the community. She provides students assistance through crisis, individual, and small group counseling when they are experiencing personal and/or social struggles that interfere with their learning environment. The school counselor develops and facilitates a guidance curriculum that follows ASCA (American School Counselor Association) indicators and standards and meets the needs of ALL students. Guidance lessons take place monthly on different social and academic skill topics in your child's classroom. Mrs. Newman coordinates 504 plans, co-leads the RtI process, and serves on the school leadership team.
Classroom Guidance Lessons
Monthly classroom guidance lessons help students understand and deal with normal developmental tasks and issues along with other important areas they need to be knowledgeable in. Examples of guidance lesson topics include character education, peer relationships, social skills, conflict resolution, bullying prevention skills/lessons, personal safety, growth mindset, etc...
Small Group Counseling
Throughout the year Mrs. Newman provides small group counseling on a variety of topics including study skills, anger, social skills, girls groups, and grief and loss.
Individual Counseling
Mrs. Newman works one-on-one with students to help them work through social/emotional and/or academic struggles. Please contact the school counselor if you are wondering if your child could benefit from individual counseling services. This is a confidential relationship and is a short-term limited intervention (not intensive therapy).
Career Café
Mrs. Newman facilitates a weekly Career Café for 4th and 5th grade students. Early in the year students complete a career interest inventory which will be used to match them up with volunteer speakers who come to share about their particular career. Students eat lunch during the presentation and then have a chance to ask questions.
Student Leadership Teams
Mrs. Newman coordinates many student leadership teams throughout the year including College GO! Week, Red Ribbon Week, Bullying Prevention, and others. Students must apply to join these teams. Selected students will brainstorm, plan, and carry out all facets of these special events.
